Koorong Banana Leaf Casket

Cherish Funerals offer a beautiful range of eco-friendly wicker or woven coffins and caskets. The Koorong Banana Leaf Casket is constructed of natural fibres and biodegradable.

Banana Leaves

The Koorong Banana Leaf Casket is part of our Eco Range Coffins and Caskets. The Banana Leaf Casket is made for the leaves of the banana plant.

  • These leaves are removed and spun ready for weaving.
  • They are woven around a solid bamboo frame
  • As a result, the leaves create a beautiful natural fibre once dried.
  • The Banana Leaf Casket is also a 100% natural product.
These woven coffins and caskets are also an affordable alternative to traditional MDF or hardwood coffins and caskets. Banana leaves are commonly used for weaving in many cultures around the world, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa. Here are the typical steps involved in harvesting banana leaves for weaving:
  1. Selecting the Leaves: Banana leaves are typically harvested from mature banana plants that are at least 2-3 years old. Leaves that are about 3-4 feet long and 1-2 feet wide are ideal for weaving.
  2. Cutting the Leaves: The leaves are usually cut with a sharp knife or machete. The cut should be made at an angle, about 2-3 inches away from the stem of the plant, to avoid damaging the stem.
  3. Preparing the Leaves: After the leaves are cut, they are typically stripped of their outer layer and the fibrous veins in the middle are removed. This is usually done with a dull knife or by scraping the leaf with a sharp tool.
  4. Drying the Leaves: Once the leaves have been prepared, they are spread out to dry in the sun for several hours or days. This makes the leaves more pliable and easier to work with.
  5. Weaving: The dried banana leaves are then ready to be woven into our beautiful and uniquely designed Koorong banana leaf casket. The Weaving technique has been passed down through generations utalising the cultural traditions of the weaver. and will vary slightly depending the material and the weaver.
